Grünfeld Defence

( ECO code D70-D99 ): 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3. ...d5

Black aims to get a strong g7-Bishop by exchanging the central pawns. White aims to control the centre.

ADVANTAGES - DISADVANTAGES
( Pros. - Cons.)

Pros

1. Central Control: White's central pawn structure becomes Black's attack target. Instead of directly capturing the central pawns, Black tries to influence them from a distance.

2. Tactical Possibilities: The Grunfeld is full of complex tactical variants. This is ideal for situations where Black is looking for an active game and wants to use his tactical skills.

3. Flexibility: The Grunfeld offers Black a variety of pawn structures and game plans. This flexibility allows Black to adapt to his opponent's style of play.

Cons

1. Theoretical Complexity: The Grunfeld is a complex opening that requires extensive theoretical knowledge.

2. Risky Play: If Black doesn't play correctly, White's center can become very strong.

3. White's Space Advantage: White can gain a space advantage in the center. This can mean a tight game for Black.

4. Time Loss: In Grünfeld, Black often wastes time to recapture pawns. This can give White an advantage in development.
